Hastings-Sunrise is the northeast corner of Vancouver, running from Nanaimo Street to Boundary Road and from the working port below the Wall Street bluff up to Broadway. It is one of the city's last big stretches of intact postwar housing, bungalows and Vancouver Specials on laned blocks, suites under most roofs, with the East Village shops along Hastings and the whole spectacle of Hastings Park in the middle. Moves here reward the kind of planning a flat rate is supposed to contain, and ours does.
Hastings Street and the East Village
The commercial spine along East Hastings, with the East Village strip centred between Commercial and Renfrew, is busy, bus-heavy, and short on legal truck staging, with the R5 rapid bus running the corridor and Kootenay Loop anchoring the east end. For apartments above the storefronts and the new rental buildings arriving along the corridor, we stage on the nearest side street and walk the goods through, with the carry measured at quote time and included in the rate.
Streetscape and utility work has been rolling through the neighbourhood, plazas, sewer renewals, curb projects, so we check the current closures near your address in the days before the move rather than trusting last month's map.
The Fair, the amphitheatre, and event-season streets
Hastings Park owns the neighbourhood's calendar. During the Fair, from late August into September, the surrounding residential blocks get temporary resident-only parking signage with aggressive enforcement, and the park's new ten-thousand-seat amphitheatre now adds concert nights well beyond Fair season. Playland and Coliseum events layer on top.
None of this stops a move, but it changes the plan: permits booked about three weeks out for Fair-season dates, early starts, staging outside the restricted blocks, and routing that respects the event tide. We check the park's calendar as part of the quote.
Wall Street and the drop to the water
North of Hastings the grid steps downhill toward Burrard Inlet, with Wall Street and McGill running along the bench above the port and New Brighton Park at the water. The steepest blocks sit just above Wall and McGill, where a loaded truck needs a real parking plan, and tall trucks need to know the Wall Street underpass at McGill runs under fourteen feet of clearance.
We scope the slope at quote time, the same discipline we use on the North Shore hills, stage on the flattest workable stretch, and price the carry into the number you confirm.
Specials, suites, and the lanes
The heart of Hastings-Sunrise is its housing stock: one of the densest runs of Vancouver Specials in the city, alongside 1940s and 50s bungalows, nearly all of it on blocks with rear lanes and a great many with basement suites. Suite moves are their own craft, side entrances, narrower stairs, low basement headroom, and lane loading is often the smartest truck position when the lane cooperates.
We check the lane, the gate, and the interior turns during the quote so the crew arrives with the right plan and padding, and nothing about the house becomes a surcharge on move day.
Getting in and out
The neighbourhood's quiet superpower is access. Does the PNE affect moving in this neighbourhood?
For the late-August Fair stretch, absolutely, and now year-round in smaller doses. During the Fair the residential blocks around Hastings Park get temporary resident-only parking signs and stepped-up enforcement, and the new amphitheatre in the park brings concert-night traffic outside Fair season too. If your move lands near the park in Fair weeks, we plan the permit and staging about three weeks ahead and time the day around the gates.
Do I need a permit for the moving truck?
Often the lane or your own frontage does the job, but when street space needs reserving, Vancouver's street-occupancy permit explicitly covers moving trucks, wants seven to ten business days from payment to signs, and, usefully, residents moving house are exempt from the liability-insurance requirement that businesses face. We handle the application at booking; the signs go up a day or two before, and a car that sneaks in after signage can be towed via 3-1-1.
My street slopes down toward the water. Is that a problem for the truck?

One local quirk we plan around: the Wall Street underpass at McGill has a posted clearance under fourteen feet, which matters for a tall truck.
Can you load from the lane behind my house?
Usually, and it is often the best option. Hastings-Sunrise is a grid of postwar bungalows and Vancouver Specials with rear lanes on most blocks, and a very high share of basement suites, so suite moves through side and lane entrances are everyday work here. We check the lane at quote time and measure the carry from wherever the truck can actually sit.
We are moving to the North Shore or out the highway. Good access?
The best in East Vancouver. Hastings and McGill both connect straight into Highway 1, with the Cassiar Tunnel underneath and the Second Narrows just beyond, and Hastings, McGill, Nanaimo, and Renfrew are all designated truck routes.
