The complications here are not access, they are geography: two rivers, a set of bridges, and hills that get steep in the north.

Houses, garages and thirty years of basement

Most PoCo moves are detached houses, and detached houses in this city tend to have been lived in for a long time. The bedrooms are rarely the issue. The volume is in:

• Full basements, usually finished, usually storing things nobody has looked at since the last move.
• Garages and workshops, holding tools, tires, garden equipment and the single heaviest items on the property.
• Garden sheds, which people genuinely forget to mention until the truck arrives.
• Crawl spaces, which are worse than basements for surprises.

The hills: Citadel Heights and Mary Hill

North and west of the centre, Port Coquitlam climbs. Citadel Heights and Mary Hill have genuinely steep streets and driveways to match, and this is the one access issue the city consistently produces.

A steep driveway looks convenient and sometimes is not usable. A loaded truck on a sharp grade is a safety problem, and a dolly on a steep incline is a different job from a dolly on the flat. Where the driveway does not work, the truck sits on the street and we plan the carry distance into the scope.

Long exterior staircases up from the street are also common in these areas. They add real time to every trip, and they belong in the quote rather than in a surprise conversation on move day.

Downtown PoCo and the newer condos

The area around the West Coast Express station and Shaughnessy Street has been steadily adding condo buildings, and those moves work like tower moves anywhere:

• Book the service elevator early. Windows are usually two or three hours, buildings only accept bookings from residents, and the good slots go first. We will tell you how much time your move really needs.
• Certificate of insurance. Most stratas want one naming the corporation before confirming anything. Send us the legal name and it goes over ahead of time.
• Check the bay clearance. We confirm the height limit for your building before move day rather than at the top of the ramp.

Move fees and refundable deposits are common. They are charged by the strata rather than by us, but we flag them at quote time so the number in your head is the real one.

The rivers, the bridges, and timing

Port Coquitlam is bounded by the Coquitlam River to the west and the Pitt River to the east, which means the exits are limited and predictable. Almost every move that leaves the city either crosses a bridge or funnels onto the Lougheed Highway.

Both back up hard at rush hour, and the Pitt River Bridge in particular queues in a way that can add half an hour to a crossing. Where the schedule allows we load in the morning and get any crossing done before mid-afternoon.

Moves that stay inside PoCo barely notice traffic at all. Those are among the easiest jobs we do: short distances, quiet residential streets, and parking that does not need a permit.

Parking, which is mercifully simple

After Vancouver, Port Coquitlam is a relief. Almost every residential street has room at the curb, most houses have a driveway, and permits are rarely needed.

The exceptions are limited to the commercial stretches around Shaughnessy Street and Lougheed Highway, and the blocks immediately around schools during drop-off and pickup, which are better handled by timing than by paperwork.

Common local move patterns

A great deal of what we do here is families moving up into a bigger house within the same city, and older residents downsizing out of a long-held house into one of the newer condos downtown. There is steady traffic in from Vancouver and Burnaby when people want space for the money, and steady traffic out toward Maple Ridge and the valley for the same reason one step further.
